Shaping Smiles with Orthodontics
Maybe you have always wanted a perfectly aligned smile, but until now, you’ve never found a dentist you felt comfortable with.
Or perhaps your child is showing signs of needing bite alignment help from a qualified professional.
Whatever the scenario that has you thinking about orthodontic treatment, Dr. Gary Alhadef can help.
What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a specialized area of cosmetic dentistry that deals primarily with diagnosing, preventing, and treating improperly aligned bites (known as malocclusions). Dr. Alhadef has completed advanced courses and training in orthodontics and has served patients in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and surrounding areas for over 25 years now. We are proud to offer orthodontic care—among our many other treatments—to both children and adults.
For children, early intervention is the key to success when correcting improper skeletal and dental arch development. Corrective dental appliances can help your child to develop a more natural, healthier, and aesthetically pleasing smile.
Adults can require braces for a number of reasons too, including their teeth shifting due to a missing tooth or the natural passage of time. There’s no age limit to braces—anyone can get them. No matter your age, Dr. Alhadef can transform your smile, making it straighter and healthier, using orthodontic appliances or several other cosmetic dentistry techniques.
Aside from improving the look of your smile, your straight teeth will help you to effectively bite, chew, and speak—and a perfectly aligned bite and smile also contributes to healthy teeth and gums. Straight teeth are much less prone to tooth decay, gum disease, and injury than crooked teeth, and they collect less plaque (a colorless, sticky film composed of bacteria, food, and saliva that collects on your teeth). Decay results when the bacteria in plaque feed on the sugar and carbohydrates that we eat or drink, producing cavity-causing acids. When teeth are properly aligned, however, it’s much easier to keep them clean and manage these risks.
Do you have protruding teeth? If so, then you know that teeth that protrude are more prone to injury. Aside from reducing the risk of damage to your teeth, you might be surprised to learn another benefit of solving your malocclusion is relief from chronic headaches or pain in the face or neck. Orthodontic problems can cause abnormal wear on tooth surfaces, inefficient chewing function, excessive stress on the gum tissue and on the bone that supports the teeth, or misalignment of the jaw joints. Aligning the bite can reduce or eliminate these stressors, removing the pain.
And you’ll discover that the cost of improving the alignment of your bite is less than repairing the dental issues you’ll have for years to come. In almost every instance, a misaligned bite causes serious problems that will affect more than the beauty of your smile.
Whether you’re an adult or a child, Dr. Alhadef can use orthodontic appliances to fix your smile and improve the overall health of your mouth. Contact our office to learn more about orthodontics.
What is accelerated orthodontics?
Most people think of braces or aligners as a treatment that takes years, and while this can be true, the treatment time for either orthodontic appliance depends on several things: the distance the teeth need to be moved, the treatment goals for the patient, the techniques used by the dentist, and the patient’s cooperation.
There is a method that can speed this process up. It’s called accelerated orthodontics. With accelerated orthodontics, Dr. Alhadef can cut treatment time in half!
Accelerated orthodontics is a combination treatment solution. In addition to regular orthodontic treatments such as Invisalign or traditional braces, Dr. Alhadef uses a special in-office device, and sends another device home with his accelerated orthodontic patients that will help to reduce the overall amount of time they spend wearing an orthodontic appliance. Dr. Alhadef prefers the VPro5 or Excellerator from Propel Orthodontics.
The VPro5 delivers gentle vibrations to complement your orthodontic treatment. Used just five minutes per day, the VPro5 helps to ensure that aligners fit properly. If an aligner is improperly seated, it can hinder your progress toward straight, beautiful teeth. Accelerated orthodontic treatment is simple—you can do it at home or on the go.
The Propel Excellerator can be used with any type of orthodontic appliance, whether you have braces or aligners. Dr. Alhadef uses the technology for just a few minutes during your regularly scheduled office visit. There are over 60,000 Propel patients worldwide who use it to get through their orthodontic treatment faster!
What can you do to help orthodontics do their job?
As with any treatment, your commitment to the process will have a large effect on the treatment’s success. To help the process along, there are several things you should do. You should:
- Keep your appointments. The more consistent you are with treatment, the less time it will take to straighten your teeth. Missing appointments delays progress.
- Keep your teeth clean. We recommend you brush twice a day for two minutes each session. Be mindful of your orthodontic appliance while brushing and be aware that while more food can get stuck in your teeth while you have braces, aligners can hold food particles against your teeth and gums. This makes brushing and flossing your teeth incredibly important.
- Don’t use your teeth to open or tear objects. We know you already know this one, but a reminder never hurts. Aside from damaging your tooth, using your teeth as a tool can also damage the orthodontic appliance.
Orthodontic treatment is a great way to get a straight smile and maintain healthy teeth and gums. As with any treatment, call our office and set up an appointment to discuss with Dr. Alhadef which orthodontics method is best for you.
