What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a man-made replacement for natural teeth. Beginning in the 1950's, researchers observed that metal titanium, and some other materials, formed a very strong bond to surrounding bone, a process called "osseointegration." After years of researching this, dental implants were refined with high success rates. There are now patients who have had implant supported teeth for more than 25 years.

Who should consider dental implants?

If you have lost one or more teeth, you know the difficulties that go along with missing teeth. Missing teeth can lead to an unattractive smile, embarrassment from loose dentures, and pain and difficulty with chewing and talking. Because of the remarkable advances in cosmetic dentistry, implant dentistry offer an effective solution to many of these problems.

How are the implants placed?

Phase #1 is the actual implant placement, a process performed by implant dentist Dr. Alhadef in his Dallas, Texas office under local anesthesia or light sedation to help make you more comfortable. Using precise, gentle surgical techniques, the implants are placed into the jawbone for 3 to 6 months while osseointegration (bonding to bone) takes place. This helps ensure a strong, solid foundation for replacement teeth. During this time, temporary bridges or dentures may be used to minimize any cosmetic or chewing inconvenience.

Phase #2 involves creating and attaching the new tooth or teeth to the anchored implant(s) in your jaw. Dental implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth or complete dentures. Dr. Alhadef will determine which is best for you.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Implant dentistry is an effective and safe solution to the problems resulting from missing teeth. Many patients report the following benefits:

  • The replacement teeth look, feel and function like natural teeth
  • They notice improved taste and appetite
  • Improved cosmetic appearance
  • Can chew without pain or gum irritation
  • Overall improved quality of life

Are there any age limitations for dental implants?

No. You can have dental implants at any age as long as there is enough bone available in which to place the implants.

What are some factors that might prevent me from being an implant candidate?

Medical factors such as uncontrolled diabetes, chemotherapy/radiation therapy, blood disorders, or rare bone disorders may prevent you from receiving dental implants. Some other factors include insufficient or poor quality bone or low sinuses.

Is dental implant surgery painful?

No. An effective local anesthetic is used during surgery so you do not feel any discomfort during the placement of your implants. Any discomfort you feel after surgery can be controlled with medications.
