Metal Free Fillings FAQ's

Metal Free Fillings in Grapevine, TX

in Dallas, Texas

What are metal-free fillings?

Metal-free fillings are also called composite or white fillings and are fillings that do not contain any metal such as the old amalgam (silver mercury) fillings contained. Metal-free fillings are used instead of amalgam fillings when treating cavities or decayed teeth.

What are the advantages of white fillings?

White fillings are more natural looking than metallic (amalgam fillings). White fillings will not turn black with age as the amalgam ones will, and they cannot be seen inside your mouth. White fillings match the color of your teeth, and they give you a more natural look. They do not contain mercury; many people believe that the mercury from metallic fillings may be hazardous to your health. White fillings also harden very quickly after they are placed whereas metallic fillings usually take a couple of hours to harden. Metal-free fillings are not as sensitive to heat and cold as metal fillings are.

Who is a good candidate for metal-free fillings?

If you have minor tooth decay or if you want to replace an existing metallic filling, you may be a good candidate for white fillings. Only your cosmetic dentist, Dr. Gary Alhadef, can determine if non-metal fillings are right for you.

Is it normal for my old silver fillings to have turned black? What can I do to change this?

It is not uncommon for old amalgam fillings to darken an entire tooth. Unlike staining, bleaching will not improve this. If you are concerned about the look of your old silver fillings, Dr. Alhadef can replace amalgam fillings with improved metal free fillings. Another way to improve discolored teeth is the application of porcelain veneers.

How are metal-free fillings placed?

A composite restoration can be placed in just one visit to Dr. Alhadef's office. To place a composite restoration, Dr. Alhadef will begin by preparing your tooth; this involves a thorough cleaning followed by materials that will protect the tooth and increase the strength of the bond. He then places the composite material onto your tooth, which is hardened by a special curing light.

Will my dental insurance pay for my metal-free fillings?

Unfortunately, a great deal of dental work is not covered by your dental insurance, but you can call your insurance company to find out if the particular procedure you need is covered. If it is not covered, we offer financing options and will work with you to make the dental work we perform as affordable as possible.
