Dallas Dental Implants

The most fundamental part of a healthy smile is good tooth-root structure. The roots of your teeth prevent teeth from shifting, maintain bone density, and provide the foundation for your smile.

Whether it is a result of gum disease, decay, or trauma, losing a tooth is a serious event that must be corrected. A missing tooth can inhibit the way you smile, speak, and eat, and it can cause many other dental problems.

Dental implants are substitutes for tooth roots that can be placed within the jawbone after a tooth has been lost. After a dental implant has been placed, a replacement tooth can be attached to it, filling the space in your smile and preventing other dental problems.

In order to provide a permanent restoration for your missing tooth, dental implants are made of titanium and fuse with your jawbone in a process called osseointegration. Once the dental implant has fully integrated with your jawbone, it provides a strong anchor for the replacement tooth.

Dental implants come in several different forms. The first type of dental implant is called a root form implant. This implant looks like a screw and is placed directly into the bone where the tooth root once was. The second type of dental implant is called a plate implant. A plate implant is usually used when the jawbone has deteriorated and is too narrow or thin for a root form implant.

The last type of implant is called a subperiosteal implant. Subperiosteal implants are only used when the jawbone has deteriorated so much that a section of it must be enhanced with an artificial, custom made jawbone. Patients rarely need this type of implant and are perfectly fine with root form or plate dental implants.

After you implant has been placed, and it has integrated with the jawbone, a replacement tooth can be attached to it. Dental implants can also be used to anchor dental bridges, if multiple teeth are missing.

Unlike dentures, dental implants are not removable. Replacement teeth are selected to perfectly match the rest of your natural teeth, and they perform just like any of your natural teeth.
