Dental Bonding in Dallas, Texas

in Dallas, Texas

Dental bonding is a procedure performed by Dallas cosmetic dentist Dr. Gary Alhadef in which a tooth-colored resin material is applied and hardened with a special light bonding the material to the tooth to restore and improve your smile. Dental bonding is also referred to as cosmetic bonding. Dental bonding is a procedure typically considered to fix the following dental problems:

  • To repair decayed teeth
  • To alter the shape of teeth
  • To protect a portion of the tooth root that has been exposed when gums recede
  • To improve the appearance of discolored teeth
  • To repair chipped or cracked teeth
  • To close gaps between teeth

Dental bonding is a fairly simple procedure that requires very little advanced preparation. Anesthesia is usually not even necessary unless the bonding is intended to fill a decayed tooth. Dr. Alhadef will show you a shade guide to select a composite resin color that will match the color of your natural teeth.

During the dental bonding process, the surface of the tooth will be roughened and a liquid to condition the tooth will be applied, helping the bonding material to adhere to the tooth being bonded. The tooth-colored resin is applied, molded and smoothed to the desired shape. An ultraviolet light is then used to harden the material, and after the material is hardened, Dr. Alhadef will trim and shape the bonding and polish it up to match the shine of the rest of the tooth's surface. The procedure typically takes 30-60 minutes from start to finish.

There are many advantages to dental bonding including it can be done in one visit, it removes only a small amount of tooth enamel, and anesthesia is not required.

Dr. Alhadef views dental bonding as best suited for minor cosmetic changes and for correction of teeth in areas of very low bite pressure (front teeth). Because bonding can chip, it is very important to avoid practices such as nail biting, chewing on ice and other hard food/objects and using your teeth to open things.

There are two types of bonding. What type is indicated in your situation depends upon whether you have a small area or a larger area that requires correction. There are one appointment-fillings that are color-matched to the tooth and bonded to the surface for added strength. These are most appropriate for small fillings and front fillings as they may not be as durable for large fillings.

Dental lab-created tooth-colored fillings require two appointments and involve making a mold of your teeth and placing a temporary filling. A dental laboratory then creates a very durable filling to custom-fit the mold made from your teeth. These fillings are typically made of porcelain. The custom-fit filling is then bonded to your tooth on your return visit. This type is even more natural looking, more durable and more stain resistant.
